At the moment Logan Brill emerged into the world and drew her first breath, Pachelbel’s “Canon in D” issued from a boom box in the delivery room. Her parents had selected the strings-driven classic to provide a soothing welcome to the world. Engaged as Logan was in the process of being born, it’s questionable whether she fully appreciated the gesture, but who knows? The important point is that, from the very beginning, music was present in the life of this Knoxville native whose new album you now hold in your hands. The offerings on Shut Eye, Logan’s second album—all products of the storyteller’s art—range from gritty blues (Shut Eye) to country (Far Cry from You) to roots (Tupelo) to newly crafted songs that have the soft patina of revered old ballads (Wish You Loved Me). “Recording my first record, Walking Wires, was enormously rewarding, but it presented me with a pretty steep learning curve,” says Logan. “When I began to work on Shut Eye, I had a much stronger sense of myself as anartist, and I built a collection of songs—a little blues and Americana and a lot of country and rock—that would reflect my tastes, demonstrate my growth and evolution as an artist, and get people out of their seats and onto the dance floor.” It’s only fitting that Logan would want her music to incline people tomove. By all accounts, she was an active baby, and the adjective her parents most frequently plied in describing her waswiggly. During her first year or two her store of energy was inexhaustible but, as yet, largely undirected. In short, she just wiggled.

Kevens Kēvens is a 21st Century renaissance man. He’s a globally informed musician, performing artist, actor, writer, and world citizen who began his entertainment career as a DJ, spinning records in South Florida’s top night clubs. Eventually, his desire to express himself musically in a more natural, organic way, led him to create and be the front man for the groundbreaking, progressive Reggae group, Le Coup, along withAnthony and Richard Booker. The band was creatively and musically light years ahead of its time and it’s still revered in South Florida. Kevens’ music and lyrics are presented in a modern, innovative Reggae style, which reflects his wide musical influences. His message of peace, brotherhood and personal growth transcends all cultures, and his sole purpose as an entertainer is to bring people together through music. His knack for being timely and profound has enabled him to share the stage with an eclectic group of legends, including Steven Tyler,The Jacksons, CarlosSantana, Steel Pulse, Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk and Tiesto, to name a few. In an increasingly divisive world, where age, nationality, race and religion are creating an ever-widening gap between people, Kevens’ message of hope is clear: “Positivity is a Necessity” Big Harvest

Jess and George met at party in 2009, with their spontaneous duet of the Prince song, “Pussy Control”. Soon after that they formed a band around a principle of originality and ruthless editing of their work. The name of the band draws inspiration from southern author William Faulkner who would tell his writing students that ‘sometimes in writing you must strangle your darlings’.
The have written and toured as a full band but once they decided to tour the US full time and live in a 20 foot RV, there was only enough extra room for the little dog. Jess is a trained classical violinist but pick up cello and discovered that she was actually a bass player. George found his degree in English Lit pays better as an indie musician and so learned the mandolin.
The music is built on deep sense of rhythm and groove. Mandolin like you’ve rarely ever seen, somewhere between a snare drum and a slalom of notes. The solid body custom cello weaves an intricate counter melody and and percussive groove. The voices and the lyrics are the hidden third member of the band and the story behind the music. The songs work with nontraditional subjects for inspiration. Some song subjects include: the works of great authors (Faulkner, William Blake, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Donald Bartheleme, Anna Ahkmatova) as well as witchcraft in the Civil War, the morality of Somali piracy and the media impact of Neil Armstrong.
Strangled darlings have released 2 full length albums and one EP, receiving praise from hometown and national press alike. They tour the US from Fairbanks Alaska to the Florida Keys and cities and towns in between.
Raiford Starke
Some astute fans were asked which two artists they would combine to describe one Raiford Starke, and they said:
“John Prine meets Ted Nugent.”
“Merle Travis meets Link Ray.”
“Jimmy Page meets Jerry Reed.”
“Doc Watson meets Johnny Guitar Watson.”
Actually, Raiford Starke is nothing if not David Allan Coe meets Jimi Hendrix, an outlaw country folk singer steeped in southern rock and psychedelic blues guitar. He’s an American original.
Colin Kenny is proud of his real name, but got stuck with the gallows humor of “Raiford Starke” long ago, branded by prison walls without ever having walked through their gates. It’s a Florida brand, the duo of state pens in the name recognizable to locals and fans of Ol’ Sparky, but Raiford Starke’s only crime is indecent distortion.
Raiford Starke was lead cowboy in the band of an Indian chief, becoming a legend among the Seminole. He’s left Virginia, worked oil fields in Texas and hocked his guitar in Memphis. He’s played festivals in Europe and Oklahoma and has sat around the campfire picking with some of music’s greats. He could drop names if he wanted to. Touring a personal circuit around the big lake and along the fringes of the Everglades, his career is off the grid. Raiford Starke might play “Freebird” for you, but he won’t tweet.
At the turn of the century, Colin Kenny cut his first solo album as Raiford Starke, recorded in the Big Cypress swamp (where Phish happened to be holding their millennium concert and invited the guitarist and aforementioned Indian chief on stage to jam). He’s been selling Speak Me at his shows ever since, pressing a hundred at a time and moving thousands over the years with “Girl From Immokolee” becoming an underground country hit and veritable anthem of the region, so much so that in 2013 Raiford Starke has made a new for the song and revived to finally release it .
Right now Raiford Starke is playing at some glitzy tribal casino or Joanie’s Blue Crab shack in Ochopee. He’s performing original music and renditions from a muddy American songbook. If it doesn’t come out on Big Cypress Records or thereabouts, you’ll have to travel through Florida’s backwaters to hear it, because the man doesn’t emerge too often. We’ll keep you posted when he does, so stay dialed to this station!
(by John Stacey for Big Cypress Records).
