It should be quite clear to any guitar player that Jimi Hendrix had a unique approach to rhythm guitar. It’s as if there was never a separation between lead and chordal playing in his mind. He was able to fluently combine, and seamlessly transition between, lead and chordal playing whenever he pleased.
To break down the barrier between chords and lead playing, we must first learn which notes will work over what chords. Matching pentatonic shapes to the major CAGED chords is a great starting point.
So here we have 5 pentatonic shapes, and their corresponding major chords… away we go!
