Reza Askari’s wood-warm double bass accompanies, joins into the melody in masterly way, corresponds with it and prances around it. The whole is based on the sensitive rhythmic background provided by Fabian Arends. In the same way as his trio companions, he knows how to create enthusiasm with his refined playing. The brushes rustle on the snare drum in all possible variations, the cymbals sparkle and radiate finesse with their daring rhythms, and the bass drum is also permitted to set an accent here and there. The way that he brings that into the playing characterized by strongcommunication and interaction is really impressive. Ballad-like chamber music jazz with strong European characteristics – romantic, full of melancholy and sensuality. The recordings range from a trio improvisation to individual compositions of the band members and all the way to pieces by Denny Zeitlin, Bill Evans and Skrjabin. A whole slew of musicians has passed through the band in the meantime. They came as promising talented musicians and left as young pros. Initial BuJazzO skeptics dare not uttera word today. What originally looked like a project for prestige purposes promoted by the German Chancellor Helmut Kohl of that time has long since become a core part of the German jazz scene. Influenced by an author of children books, they founded their duo "Lottchen". Since then, they never stopped exploring the world of duo playing… Lottchen plays whatever fits their unconventional combination of vibes and vocals: deformed popsongs, jazzstandards, original compositions… Genres happily collide in Lottchen’s repertoire, combining text and instrumental singing in a sensitive way. The acoustic variety in the vocals is also extensively found in the vibraphone’s accompaniment through all kinds of contrasting soundscapes and different "prepared mallets". Over the years Lottchen established an almost magical interplay, unique and intense. On Vol. 1, it was his WDR Big Band of Cologne colleagues John Goldsby on bass, dutch drummer legend John Engels and WDR musical director and conductor Michael Abene on piano. On Vol. 2, Heller was joined by jazz drumming icon Al Foster, bassist Goldsby and pianist Olaf Polziehn. The results of those first two offerings were equally dynamic and characterized by the same impeccable sense of chemistry among the players. As a sweet apple that has fallen off your neighbours tree into your garden can be a pretty nice thing, ‘windfall’ also serves as a metaphor for an unexpected opportunity. Ensemble Denada’s music is full of windfall. There is plenty of lucky accidents and coincidents, sounds and noises that go together in themost unexpected ways. Even the songs themselves often derive from obscure chances and stories. To say it in the band’s own words “A swimming moose, swimming a West Norwegian fjord can become a jazz song in 5/4, a typing error on a sheet of music can lead into a song about a sofa on a wild sleigh ride down a steep hill.” Of course a musical project can never fully rely on the concept of luck, someone needs to pull the strings and grab the opportunities as they come along. For Ensemble Denada this someone is trombone player Helge Sunde. Being the musical mastermind behind the Norwegian jazz orchestra, Sunde is responsible for all compositions and arrangements.
