I’ve already posted a video documenting the remarkable story of , today he’s introducing us to acoustic guitar finger tapping.
This follows on quite nicely from the C, taking the next step along the road of percussive guitar which is essentially the art of finding weird ways of making wonderful noises with an acoustic guitar.
Finger tapping is basically using one or both hands in a series of hammer ons and pull offs, and is by no means unique to the acoustic guitar, any rock lead guitarist worth his mullet will be proficient at finger tapping, in fact the electric guitar is more conducive to finger tapping as thanks to amplification you don’t have to hit the strings with as much force.
Below is a great example of acoustic guitar finger tapping. Matt Marriott’s composition ‘Cat tapping’ is a superb track showing exactly how it should be done. Matt also uses body percussion and harmonics in this piece, the picture quality isn’t brilliant but it’s clear enough to see what he’s doing and there’s no problem with the audio.
Finger tapping is a great string to add to your bow as an acoustic guitarist (pardon the pun), for using in your own compositions, giving you greater options when learning new pieces or simply as exercise and strengthening for your fingers.
The lesson below takes us through 2 different exercises, explaining the different ways to tap with both hands, the video quality is excellent using multiple angles. Maneli teaches at a good pace making this 12 minute lesson easy to absorb, and offers variations in the exercises he demonstrates.
