Audio (MIDI): Stormy Monday progression (short):
Often the last dominant 9th chord (D9) is replaced by an augmented chord, Daug or Daug7.
Old Love
This is an example for a non Blues specific chord sequence. It uses the progression
Am – Dm7/A – G7sus4 – G
Audio (MIDI): Old Love:
to go from the tonic Am (key is A minor) to the leading tone G, which is the dominant of the relative major scale C. Dm7 is the subdominant of Am as well as the dominant of G. Instead of playing a simple G chord (which would fit anyway) we use another replacment of Dm7, G7sus4. This again leads finally to G. So we used the basic rules: only notes fitting the scale and keeping at least two notes when going to the next chord. See it:
Am A-C-E
