Here I have chosen a free guitar lesson by Nate Savage from guitarlessons.com, who will talk you through 8 essential guitar chords for beginners.
As a beginner it’s nice to be able to pick a few single notes and play a recognisable tune, but it’s when you first confidently hammer down on all 6 strings and belt out a chord that you feel like you’ve arrived on the music scene and Carnegie hall is in sight.
One of my happiest moments was spent sitting on the end of my bed a few days after I’d first picked up a guitar for the first time, playing the Beatles “Let it be” on CD whilst belting out the 4 chords I knew. My timing, strumming and tone were awful, but for those 4 minutes I was the fifth Beatle.
It’s a special thing to be able to enjoy music that you are creating yourself and these are the first steps on that road.
The basic chords set you on the road to being a musician, over the coming years you may learn dozens or even hundreds of chords (there are in fact millions of chords to learn if you take altered tunings into account), or like many well known guitarists you may just stick to some of the basics and do very well from it. Believe it or not you will be able to play most of the songs you know with these chords.
I am a believer in keeping it simple to start with, trying to learn too many at once will only lead to confusion. Once you’re happy with what you’ve already learnt then you can introduce more chords.
If you are a complete beginner I would suggest you only try and learn a couple of chords at a time then carry on only when you are ready.
This is a well produced video, clearly presented and taken at an appropriate pace for beginners.
Enjoy!
