This lesson will teach you how to use a guitar capo, combine that with the basic guitar chords and you can play along to any track in any key.
We join Justin from justinguitar.com for this lesson as he shows us in his usual chirpy manner how to use a guitar capo and when it should be used. He describes how it can be useful for bringing the guitar into a key to suit a vocalist and shows just how straight forward it is to use this basic piece of kit.
Far be it for me to pick holes in Justin’s lesson, and I have said before how much of a fan of his I am. But one thing he doesn’t highlight is how useful a capo is when jamming or transposing a song you’ve learnt, (changing a piece from one key to another).
When jamming with a band if you’ve learnt a track in G and everyone’s playing in C, just put the capo on the fifth fret and away you go.
If you’ve learnt the chords to a certain song from a book or the internet and then try to play along to a recording it might not sound right, this will most probably be because the song is in a different key to the version you’ve learnt. All you need to do is play about with the capo, moving it up and down the neck until your ear tells you you’ve found the right key. The more you practice this the easier it gets.
Enjoy the lesson.
There really isn’t any more to it then that, try it now with a piece you know well, it’s a little odd at first but you’ll get used to it in no time.
Personally I use G7th and Shubb capos. G7th seems to be the most popular but if pushed I’d have to say I prefer the Shubb. Click on the images to see the items in amazon.
Well I sincerely hope you enjoyed the lesson, please feel free to leave any comments or questions below and I will reply as soon as possible.
