Since then, Ilvekyo has seen several line-up changes and new sounds, but one thing remains true; the songs are honest, fun and full of life, and there will always be Mason. Ilvekyo iscurrently completing and releasing their third album, 'Out Of Control', as part of Marvest Album Release Program, with help from Justin Trudeau, Nick Gabroussenok, Samantha Timmins and Rob Milicevic as a backing band on the album and contributors to the structure of the music. The Brook September 17, 2015 from 10pm to 10:45pm House of Targ *$5 Cover Fee Led by Newfoundland-born songwriter Sarah Murphy, The Brook’s catchy, multi-dimensional sound is steeped in East Coast flavour and draws influence from the likes of Hey Rosetta!, Said The Whale and Serena Ryder. Established in 2013, their highlights include performing at RBC Bluesfest's Bluesprint Series, Ottawa Race Weekend, winning CKCU FM's Tuned In Contest and opening for Current Swell, Zerbin, and The Royal Streets. As displayed by the title track written about the dating app Tinder, theirnew EP ‘Sweet Talk’ is an exploration of modern millennial relationships. Singer-songwriter Sarah Murphy explores the way in which this generation uses dishonesty and deception to sweet talk their way into people’s lives - and sheets. In tandem with the culture it questions, the EP’s sexy undertones betray a hidden desire for acceptance in an increasingly disingenuous world. Alex Silas & the Subterraneans September 17, 2015 from 10pm to 11pm Aberdeen Stage High Waters September 17, 2015 from 11pm to 11:45pm House of Targ *$5 Cover Fee High Waters are a captivating art-rock band from Ottawa, Ontario. They are dedicated to seriously thoughtful music presented in an exciting and elegant stage show. Combining guitar-driven rock and folk undertones with electronic textures, they deliver a sound reminiscent of Radiohead, Wintersleep and Grizzly Bear. High Waters are putting the finishing touches on their upcoming album entitled 'Goodnight Mara', due for release at Marvest on September19th. 'Goodnight Mara' is High Waters' first full-length album, encapsulating the band's stylistic progressions since the release of their debut 'Gather Wish' EP. From metaphysical abstractions of life after death, to the unspoken reality behind the throes of deep sleep, the album covers lots of uncharted territory with thought-provoking lyrics. Wonderfully arranged, the 12-track album is a unique body of work abounding with flavour that teases the musical palate and whets the appetite with every song. Up-front and vulnerable, the pure emotions conveyed in chamber folk song "Holden" are well-contrasted by subtle nuances of sci-fi synths and a thumping electro beat in the album opposite, "Isabelle". Songs like "Rip" and "Mercury" sit nicely in between with clear signs of rock, funk, neo-soul, and electronica influences. Sep 18, 2015 Her Harbour September 18, 2015 from 6pm to 6:45pm Aberdeen Stage Her Harbour is the moniker of indie-folk singer-songwriter Gabrielle Giguere. A collection of nine intimate songs touching on loss, heartbreak, family, abuse, mental illness and addictions, Winter’s Ghosts finds Giguere marrying her lyrics and voice to the music she crafts, blending instruments such as autoharp, piano, and guitar with textural elements drawn from vocal layering, vintage keyboards, field recordings and a collection of household objects. Since the release of Winter's Ghosts on E-Tron Records, Her Harbour’s live performances have grown to include the likes of Jamie Kronick (drums, percussion), Philippe Charbonneau (bass synth, keyboard, vocals) and Pierre-Luc Clément (piccolo guitar, slide guitar, percussion, vocals). Recently Giguere has taken to composing music for film including TV5's short series 2h14. Giguere is currently working on her second full length album set to be released in the Autumn of 2015. "L'univers de la jeunewoman is tinged with a palpable nostalgia, memories and a certain melancholy introspection who inspire us and make us want to stop there, like that, just watching the passing of time. " The Ramblin' Valley Band September 18, 2015 from 9pm to9:45pm FarmTeam Cookhouse After a fruitful summer exploring the sights and sounds of the Toronto scene, long time musical compatriots and serial jammers Joseph McDonald, Matthew Armitage and Trevor Lubin returned to their hometown of Ottawa to begin anew. It was here that they continued to expand their influences, to find new inspiration in old artists and long forgotten genres, honing their skills on new instruments and learning the great traditional folk songbook of Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie. Then they met Zach Ledgerwood in the summer of 2014, and from their very first jam session, their collective future seemed clear and almost inevitable. Combining under the new name, The Ramblin’ Valley Band, they continued to play the blues, country, jazz and rock’n’roll that they had loved and subsisted on for so long, but they also branched out into areas previously unexplored. Under a rigorous new schedule of gigs, radio appearances, practice and dedicated listening, they evolved into ahybrid bluegrass band that could, and would, play anything under the sun. Armed with all manner of instruments, three-part vocal harmonies, and improvised jam sections, The Ramblin’ Valley Band became a formidable organism that thrives playing in front of an audience. They don’t believe in ever playing a song the same way twice, and do their utmost to write songs that embody all their favorite parts of bluegrass, blues, country, rock, folk and jazz. But don’t take our word for it – come out and decide for yourself. Stone Age Man September 18, 2015 from 9pm to 9:45pm Wild Oat "Stone Age Man is an 9 piece band from Wakefield, QC whose pop experiments blur the lines of style, texture and era to cross boundaries and cultures and twist music into new and interesting shapes. Lowdown News described them as ""a musical love triangle between Burt Bacharach, Tom Waits and Elvis Costello"". It's catchy tunes with fun arrangements. It's a thumping beat, a simple refrain, a catchy melody and aplayful lyric. It's a field holler in Cuban heels. It's baroque pop.... It’s Stone Age Man! Stone Age Man is of his own age, runs on his own time and dances to a great beat! Grounded in roots, jazz and world music, it is the pop sensibility and song craft that brings this music together to take you on a journey through a groovy place; full of texture and playful twists. At times sweet, at others, gritty and funny; the lyrics explore a landscape of joy, loss, hope, intrigue and the fall from grace. Primal beats and howls give way to sweet pop and hints of the exotic, all told through the off-beat characters that inhabit the songs. Stone Age Man is the creation of composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist Greg Paul Stone. The debut Stone Age Man EP, Touch The Sun, was released in November 2014 and features the finest bunch of scallywags and ne'er-do-wells that could be prodded into a stairwell for the purposes of sonic revelation and gin. StoneAgeMan.ca Moonfruits September 18, 2015from 9pm to 9:45pm Original Burger Joint Snappy rhythms and soulful harmonies, Moonfruits is a romance set aflame by voice and guitar. For Alex and Kaitlin, singing and writing music together is a matter of opening the suitcase and taking a good, hard look at everything in it. Their convictions, aspirations, experiences and fears are all fodder for an artistic showcase, and their arrangements reflect the sweetness and complexity of intimate co-creation and expression in the highest. With a host of material rooted in folk music, common ground was quickly laid for the duo, who recorded their Début EP in May of 2013 at Metropolitan Studios in Ottawa. Moonfruits’ unadorned sound weaves its way through traditional Québecois and American folk, jazz and original folk-pop. Inspired by their 2013 busking tour of France and Spain, the duo stays light on its feet, twisting and bending songs to the will of the moment. Their live show is eclectic and sweet, and never takes itself too seriously.“The dynamic between Alex and Kaitlin was perfect, and one could instantly discern how much chemistry was at work here . . .” ~ Ottawa Showbox on Moonfruits’ November 2014 show at the Black Sheep in Wakefield, Québec The duo has recently secured a standing gig at the Lowertown Brewery in the Byward Market, and is busily writing their first LP to be released Fall 2015. On the release of their eponymous fall 2011 debut, Orienteers have been able to take their mesmerizing live show to the stage with fellow indie dream-explorers Low, the Flaming Lips and Metric, even Skrillex, toured Western Canada and played at festivals like Calgary's Sled Island, NXNE, CMW and Ottawa Bluesfest. Their music has since appeared on NPR’s All Songs Considered, Nickelodeon/MTV’s Degrassi: The Next Generation, along with a National Film Board project called Fire, the Travel Network and several short films. Since settling on a new name that they felt better reflected their penchant for writing about travel, Orienteers have penned an album that is quiet and sparse, but feels complete in and of itself, as it traversesthe realm of psych and folk. Orienteers’ first eponymous full-length (out via Antique Room), is, in their own words, “… a travel focused collection of fragile space-folk, layered with looping pedal-steel guitar, wind chime acoustics and warm blankets of bass and brush sticks.” On Orienteers, the experimental melancholia is heightened by countrified guitars, undulating synth and subdued vocals—all swirled into a melodic psychedelic dream." The Strain September 18, 2015 from 10:30pm to 11:15pm Irene's There’s no irony in saying there’s a lot of pressure being put on Wakefield’s The Strain. The 6-song Hush Hush EP was released in early 2012 independently received media attention and air-play on alternative rock radio for their first single “Make It.” Influenced by indie-pop groups like Mother Mother and Phoenix to their dad’s Blondie albums, without internet access in the small village, Taggart turned to songwriting. Continuing to engagethe themes of breaking free of small-town characters and limitations lyrically, The Strain have been diligently working on their song-writing skills in preparation for recording their first LP, including song-writing workshops with James Robertson (Down with Webster). They are no longer the family-band but professional musicians determined to make playing catchy pop songs a career that flow as quickly as the river that runs through their small town to your headphones. The Split September 18, 2015 from 11:30pm to 12:15am Irene's For many of us, soul music is a fondness we just can’t shake, and finding “new” soul music often means digging deep into the crates for something fresh -- if you’ve found yourself in this situation, might we prescribe checking out The Split. For brothers Curtis and Matt Chaffey and their ensemble, new life is breathed into that soulful sound you’ve been yearning for by stark ingenuity. The band’s break-out project ‘Can’t Get Enough’ is energetically infused with guitar parts, horns and bass reminiscent of '60s soul/rock and '70s soul/funk, and features dreamy synth sequences that render its sound euphoric and entirely distinct. “When Curtis and I started the Split we knew we needed a foundation, a sound that put us in the category ofR&B/soul, but not nostalgic soul, on Can’t Get Enough, on songs like Attitude and I Tried To Be Your Man, we accomplished that (goal) by incorporating modern sounds with more traditional ones.” ~ Matthew Chaffey The East Pointers September 18, 2015 from 11:30pm to 12:30am Aberdeen Stage The East Pointers are three young men whose talent and penchant for traditional Celtic tunes of decades past greatly belie their respective ages. And while each member of the freshly formed trio – banjoist Koady Chaisson, fiddle player Tim Chaisson, and guitarist Jake Charron – is an accomplished musician in his own right, their recent union is a testament to their shared output being greater than the sum of its parts. The cousins Chaisson hail from Prince Edward Island, part of the sixth generation of a heralded legacy of fiddlers and folk musicians. Tim tours the world as a performer/songwriter with a pop and country-tinged take on contemporary folk, with Koady often at his side or supporting othertouring trad acts with his banjo, bass, and six-string. Jake, on the other hand, is based in Ontario and has strummed, plucked, and played piano alongside a vaunted list of award-winning performers from around the globe. As their trunk of traditional and original tunes started to fill up, the trio realized it was time to put some to tape and take them on the road. Whether they’re carving up a living room, local pub, or a music festival like CityFolk, The East Pointers are sure to put a smile on your face and a jig in your step. Cody Allen September 18, 2015 from 11:30pm to 12:15am Black Squirrel Books Cody Allen brings together a refreshing sound that is bold, vulnerable, mysterious, and intimidating at a moment’s notice – and sometimes all of those things at once. His style is a beautifully painted reflection of the modern day hipster, that “effortless cool”, which resonates in his sound. Allen, who professed a love for rock and folk at a very young age, has focused on making musicthat sounds loud and proud, taking music that is often considered to be mellow and delicate and filling it with passion, electricity and confidence. His incredible energy draws crowds in quickly to his circle of songs and to the warmth of his stories. Cody Allen’s new album “Ignite” promises to be filled with energy and truth. After years of touring and life-changing experiences, his growth in song writing is on display with songs about love, loss and perseverance. DJ Andrew Carter September 19, 2015 from 10pm to 12am Local Restaurant High Waters September 19, 2015 from 10pm to 11pm Aberdeen Stage High Waters are a captivating art-rock band from Ottawa, Ontario. They are dedicated to seriously thoughtful music presented in an exciting and elegant stage show. Combining guitar-driven rock and folk undertones with electronic textures, they deliver a sound reminiscent of Radiohead, Wintersleep and Grizzly Bear. High Waters are putting the finishing touches on their upcoming album entitled 'Goodnight Mara', due for release at Marvest on September 19th. 'Goodnight Mara' is High Waters'first full-length album, encapsulating the band's stylistic progressions since the release of their debut 'Gather Wish' EP. Evening Hymns September 19, 2015 from 10pm to 10:45pm FarmTeam Cookhouse Evening Hymns is the ever-evolving musical project of Jonas Bonnetta, a musician/artist/sawyer who lives in rural Eastern Ontario.Evening Hymns is a musical reflecting pool. The currents of his emotional poetry evoke collective memories and experiences we somehow all share. The band’s last record, 'Spectral Dusk' (2012), covered deeply personal issues and took Evening Hymns to the next level, musically and lyrically, from their debut record‚ 'Spirit Guides' (2009). A study of loss, pain, hope and a pathway drawn out of the dark into the light, 'Spectral Dusk' found Jonas dealing with the loss of his father. The record spilled its guts out on the floor, and yet so softly allowed the listener to reflect on his or her own mortality. Their new album, 'Quiet Energies', is less personal in nature. It’s a record made for listening with the windows rolled down like the classic road records of the 1970s. The album was made in Bonnetta's home studio -- a cabin outside his rustic home in Port William Sound. Heated by an antique wood stove, and with a panoramic view of the surrounding fields, its peaceful environmentinspired and bolstered the recording experience. Jonas assembled a familiar group of friends to make the album, including longtime band mates Sylvie Smith and Jon Hynes, as well as friends from Timber Timbre and The Wooden Sky. Call me crazy, but I think we balance songwriting, entertainment value, and a little bit of weirdness unlike anyone else.” Zoo Legacy September 19, 2015 from10:30pm to 11:15pm The Unrefined Olive "Since releasing its debut self-titled EP in 2011, indie alternative hip hop band Zoo Legacy has gone on to open for acts such as Lauryn Hill, Shad, and Classified. He is a sure footed teller of yarns, and his tales of wit are woven seamlessly through song and stage banter, making him an enthralling live performer. His songs gain further depth by his skilled finger-style and slide guitar playing, lending an aching melody or creating gritty background for the images embedded in his lyrics. To date, John has recorded three full length albums (True Confessions of an Infamous Liar – 2002, Lost Radio – 2008, Everybody Smokes in Hell -2012), each with critically acclaimed engineer, Dave Draves at Little Bullhorn Studio, (Kathleen Edwards, Jim Bryson, Camp Radio, HiLo Trons). Canada\'s top folk, roots and world music magazine, PEGIUN EGGS stated: “If Hades had a telephone line to Earth, a call from down there would sound like John Carroll\'s voice on Everybody Smokes in Hell.” Both of John's second and third albums were recorded with the musician's who make up his current band, The Epic Proportions. Theseguys are top shelf players of Ontario and Ottawa's vibrant music scene and John has been playing with them for over a decade. With Fred Guignon on electric and slide guitar, Olivier Fairfield on percussion and Phil Charbonneau on up right and electric bass, The Epic proportions never fail to create an astounding sonic field for John's mindfully crafted lyrics. The Halifax Herald praised the album also, saying they felt like the album\'s songs were “covered in dust and ash,” like they came from “the back porch of a back roads curio shop.” This year, John will be releasing his first live solo album, recorded at renown venue The Acoustic Grill, in Picton, ON. John is the eighth seasoned artist to be recorded for the Acoustic Jams series, following the likes of Tom Wilson, Al Lerman and Brock Zeeman. John\'s first two full length solo albums, “The True Confessions of an Infamous Liar,”(2003) and “Lost Radio” (2008) were well received, sold and continue to be sold to audiences all overCanada, the U.S and Europe. All of John\'s albums fit into “a variety of genres and time-periods, all the while synthesizing the eclectic elements (of) his music into a coherent, contemporary and colorful sound” (indieAndie.ca).
