Bob Knysz – Mandolin – Vocals
Bob’s music roots begin in Chicago, where he started playing music at the age of 8. Blues, Folk and Rock guitar were his early influences. In 1978 he discovered the mandolin with Bill Monroe, Doyle Lawson and Jethro Burns as his early mandolin influences. He began playing mandolin professionally in 1979 in Chicago and became a member of the Atlanta music scene in 1982. His love affair with the mandolin has brought him through many musical idioms including: blues, bluegrass, country, acoustic, classical, choro, and jazz. Bob has played with the Greater Atlanta Bluegrass Band, Bluegrass in the Backwoods, Bluegrass Five, Good Medicine, Hot Club of Atlanta, and the Handsaw Brothers. Bob is also the co-founder and concertmaster of the Atlanta Mandolin Orchestra.
Ed Davis – Bass – Vocals
A native of Alberta, VA, Ed has enjoyed bluegrass music as long as he can remember. Although classically trained as a music educator at East Carolina University and Georgia State University, his main musical interest has been bluegrass for almost 40 years. After moving to the Atlanta area in the mid ‘70s, he played bass and banjo with Chattahoochee Station. Since that time he has performed with Pony Express, Bluegrass in the Backwoods and Faculty Grass. Having eclectic musical tastes, he has played cello in the Southern Crescent Symphony Orchestra, electric bass in the Steve Shivers Trio and Community Bible Church Chapel Orchestra, and mandola in the Atlanta Mandolin Orchestra. Ed spent 37 years as a music educator in Georgia public and private schools and now serves as orchestra director at Jonesboro United Methodist Church.
Jody Hughes – Banjo
The highlights of Jody’s musical career include performing on the stages of the Grand Ole Opry, Merlefest, and the Philadelphia Folk Festival. He has won several competition awards including: 2006 Merlefest Banjo Competition Winner and Three Time Winner of the Georgia State Flatpick Guitar/Banjo competitions. Jody has been performing and teaching guitar, banjo and mandolin for over 15 years. He currently maintains a schedule of over 30 students a week. Jody has played guitar and banjo for artists such as Jim Lauderdale, Alan Munde, Ross Nickerson, and Randy Kohrs to name a few. Some of Jody’s Bluegrass music Influences are Allen Shelton, Don Reno, JD Crowe, Osborne Brothers, Kenny Baker, Keith Whitley. Jody resides in the Canton, GA area.
Robert “Bob” Putnam – Guitar – Vocals
Robert “Bob Putnam is a native Georgian who grew up in Clayton County. as a child he would listen to his father play the harmonica on the porch at their home. A nurturing mother purchased a Silvertone acoustic guitar which Bob started to play at the age of 12. Through the years his dominate influences in music were John Prine, Bob Dylan, Tony rice and groups such as the Dillards. Cedar Hill and Mountain Heart. Bob has performed at countless events through the years. He currently lives in Canton, GA and has performed with the band “Faculty Grass” for the past 27 years and the Jot’em Down Boys.
Danny Bermel – Fiddle – vocals
We think Danny is one of the hottest up and coming great fiddlers from Georgia. Danny is a music educator and is currently attending the University of Georgia where he is working on his Doctorate in Music. Danny is one of the upcoming composers of fiddle tunes in Georgia. He has also performed with Ed and Bob in “Faculty Grass” band and with Bob Putnam in the Jot’em Down Boys and is always in great demand in the North Georgia area.
Walt Dean – Dobro – vocals
Walt is an Atlanta native and 40 year veteran of the Atlanta music scene. Beginning guitar while in high school, Walt was soon playing in neighborhood bands and by the 70’s was working professionally and had decided on a life in music. Over the following decades, Walt has played thousands of gigs of every type, size, genre and venue, and has worked as a guitar teacher as well as doing recording sessions in Atlanta and Nashville. He has studied music and guitar with Atlanta guitar luminaries Bob Shaw at the Atlanta School of Music, George Petsch at the Atlanta Guitar Center, Merrill Dilbeck at Metro Music, Georgia Music Hall of Fame member Graham Jackson, as well as dozens of workshops, most notably with players such as Howard Roberts and Rob Ickes. Walt is currently playing guitar with the Atlanta Mandolin Orchestra and plays dobro with Atlanta’s best bluegrass musicians. (Missing from photo above).
