Jozef Scheiner (*1975, Bratislava) is a mandolin player, composer and journalist from Slovakia. He first picked up the mandolin at the age of 15 (his father played the guitar, and his grandfather was a mandolinist), and soon formed his first bluegrass band. He listened to the music of Mike Marshall or Sam Bush, however, it was David Grisman’s music that influenced Jozef the most. He began to compose his own instrumental pieces and when he was around 20, his bluegrass band, the Grasshoppers, took part in a mandolin competition held in the Czech Republic. They won the competition after playing Jozef’s own compositions, of which the best known one is called Romale. He also studied classical mandolin in Italy. Since then, Jozef has explored various musical styles including newgrass, new acoustic music, modern country, rock, pop and jazz (for example he was a member of traditional swing band Funny Fellows). Jozef’s first solo album Perinmama (2014) not only showcases his incrediblemusicianship, but also magically captures the rich, warm tones of great musicians playing great music (the guest musician on album are Peter Luha – guitars, Stanislav Palúch – violin, Dino Majdák – percussions, Marek Berky – wind instruments, Peter Szabados – dobro and Michal Vavro – acoustic guitar). The album contains Jozef’s own compositions of various moods and he used three types of mandolin – acoustic, acoustic-electric and resonator one. He also play electric guitar and resonator guitar and in one case bass guitar. The self-released album was taken at the end of 2014 to the US distribution by David Grisman’s label Acoustic Oasis as a first one from Slovakia and a few from Europe.
