Now you’ve understand the typical basics of a guitar and choosing your own piece of guitar, here I’ll be walking you through on how to play a guitar for beginners. At first, you’ll need to know how to hold your guitar.
Do you know how to hold a guitar? What’s the correct way holding a guitar? There are two common ways to hold a guitar, in Classical Posture, and in Casual Posture.
This is the very original and vintage way of holding a guitar, especially holding a classical guitar. This posture actually is the correct way of holding a classical guitar as it makes easier for one to play on the upper frets with more spaces without any part of body blocking. Besides, one usually uses a Foot Rest for left leg so that the guitar could sit on a higher position. During formal performance such as an orchestra concert or a music opera, classical guitarist will be performing their classical guitar with classical posture, showing their professionality of their very own piece of classical guitar.
When time goes by, people tempt not to follow the original way of holding a guitar. They play acoustic guitar in a lively way, playing a guitar anywhere they like and they could play a guitar while standing, coming with the introduction of electric guitar, things are not formal anymore and everyone just casual. With era of evolvement and advanced society stepping forward, here comes the casual posture.
One does not looks as much as formal in a casual posture where this way of holding a guitar is the most popular nowadays. One easily holds a guitar without the leg rest, sitting on ground or leaning against anything as a support to play, more towards “Portable” way of playing a guitar.
Me myself is also playing my classical guitar in a casual posture. I am used to play a guitar in this casual way and too doesn’t like it so much of being too formal. I like playing guitar relaxing, I am feeling free with the casual posture. BUT, please do not get me wrong and of course I am to introduce all my students with both ways in holding a guitar. It is not a must but from my personal opinion, we’ll need to know the basic history and knowledge for our own understanding, and then you get your freedom in choosing the way you like!
Now you have everything set! You’re about to start playing your very own guitar! Below are the only two basics left you’ll need to know and you’re good to go for my Lesson 1.
